I needed a warm tropical place to get away for the weekend when I discovered that the St Regis opened a resort in Bahia Beach in Puerto Rico. After being disappointed by the food or service (or both) in many other “5 star” Caribbean locations, I decided to only commit to a 3 night stay. I figured that if it was terrible, it would be over fast.
Luxury Meets the Preserve
I loved the mixture of lux retreat and nature preserve. The rooms are exquisitely furnished with lovely details and high environmental standards. The two-mile sandy beach on the northeast coast of the island of Puerto Rico, Bahia Beach is at the foot of a natural reserve of 483 acres. Over 65% of the property is preserved as green areas, sanctuaries and nature trails. We were told at the Iguana Club of how the that the hotel considered protecting the local environment so important that when leatherback turtles started to lay eggs on the beach, that they closed off that area to protect them.
Restaurant Fern
The cuisine at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Fern lives up to his name. I had dinner there twice (because once was not enough). The decor combines Latin and Afro-Caribbean materials within a Spanish Colonial Building. The design acts as a backdrop to “frame” the spectacular ocean view with indigenous materials found by the sea and reflect the sparkle and luminosity of the moonlight and the ocean.
Sublime Spa
The RemèdeSM Spa at the St Regis Bahia Beach is amazing. I needed a facial, a pedicure and a massage. I had limited time, but they were able to take my three needs and personalize a service just for me. In and hour and half give me an amazing personalized mini facial, a mini massage and a toe polish change all while making me feel special. This is different from most spas where you have to fit their schedule and their exact services. It offers a full menu of services including facial, massage and body services. The services are combined with touches such as champagne. A floating pathway lead to a secluded massage villa, with a large window overlooking the garden. I needed a facial, a pedicure and a massage.
