How To Slay The Sunglasses: A Girl’s Key Accessory

Barbie Movie

Your most important accessory is a great pair of sunglasses.  Why? It is not just because you need the newest fashion trend or to look like Barbie.

Sunglasses elevate and finish your look, they set your mood, and (if needed) allow you to hide. If those reasons are not compelling enough, sunglasses can prevent premature wrinkles by keeping you from squinting and can protect your eyes from harmful rays which cause eye diseases. Additionally, they help reduce the chance of light triggered migraines.

How do you pick out the best style for you and what sunglasses are in fashion this season?

When making your choice you need to decide what category you want. I categorize sunglasses as Fashionable, Statement and/or Sporty with some crossover in categories.

Fashionable Shade Picks:

Fashionable shades are elegant and stylish. They elevate your look, work with most of the items in your closet and will still be in style next year. This season’s fashionable picks by the stars this summer include Celine and Loewe. Gucci, Ferragamo and Chanel are always classic choices.

Statement Shade Picks:

Statement shades are bold and complete an outfit or look but may look out of place without the outfit. There are great statement shades coming out this season. White is the really hot color. @Bryanboy and @colorfully do statement shades (and accessories) beautifully. I like to think of these shades as a decoration for my state of mind, like adding flowers to a beautiful table setting.

Sporty and Sporting Shade Picks:

Sporty and Sporting sunglasses look good on you but can be functional. Pick a lens designed to enhance colors, textures and lighting conditions for your environment. Oakley has lens for the tennis court, the golf course and the water (for fishing).

Other favorite sporting and sporty glasses include designs by Oliver Peoples and Rayban.

Tips for Picking out Sunglasses that look great on YOU:

When picking out a pair of sunglasses keep in mind they may look good on your favorite actress but that does not mean they work for you. Here is a general sunglasses quick guide, broken down by hair color:

  • Light blonde hair: Silver aviators, light caramel colored frame
  • Blonde/light brown hair:  Lighter colored frame like caramel or tortoiseshell, gold aviators
  • Brown to dark brown hair: Medium brown to dark brown frames or gold metal frame
  • Grey hair:  Your favorite bright color or white

The Finishing Touch

Lip color is the perfect and easy finishing touch. I love a beautiful red or deep pink with darker sunglasses.  This lip color also works especially well if you have blue eyes, white or dark hair.  For the rest of us an easy match is a raspberry or pink/coral lipstick or gloss.

Have fun!!
