When a girl finds herself in DC and the temperature rises above 90° may I suggest that she dip into “Whistler in Watercolor” exhibit at the Freer/Sackler Gallery. This should cool you down and refresh you.
On public exhibit for the first time in 80 years, James Whistler’s watercolor subject matter ranges widely. Take a look: a domestic interior, a fashionable friend, a view of the streets. It’s all there. But for this viewer, his water “nocturnes” are the highbar. His luminous views of the water at night are mystery itself and you may find yourself returning more than once for one last look.
His intention was to attract purchasers, rich Americans, in fact, who could easily put the watercolors in their traveling valises and board a European steamer for home.
As I looked at these watercolors it was just me and Whistler’s genius taking me on a grand tour of seas and skies. Snap a photo for later? I tried but you just can’t! The emotional depth and the spirit of Whistler’s watercolors are intimate. You fall into them and a mere snap can’t describe the journey.
You have to be there. These watercolors amassed by Museum’s founder Charles Lang Freer are only on display until November 3rd so now is the time to make a trip to the gallery.
