Time to make decisions on the spring wardrobe! I like to start with Fashion Week (Spring 2017). This season brings multilayering (in seams, color, style, fabric), reconstructed ruffles and shirting. The skirts and pants tend to be longer and less fitted. Accessories like statement shoes, earrings and bags finish the look. How do we wear this season’s trends?
Trend: Multilayered Edge
Layering textures and styles can be challenging to pull off, but when done right is chic and sophisticated . The looks below rocked the trend. All three contain elements that pull the seemingly unmatched styles, colors and textures together.
How do they do it?:
- Gucci uses the shirt as the focal point to bring the blazer, shoes and multi-strand pearls together. The pants, belt and scarf are used to add depth in color and texture.
- Altuzzara brings the overall look together with the accessories. White statement earrings bring in the white in the top, blue shoes bring in blue in the skirt and a black belt and black trimmed purse supply the finishing touch.
- Olivia Palermo wears the look well by layering a an unbuttoned white cotton shirt and an olive green satin bomber jacket over her basic yellow shirt. She pushes up the sleeves so her watch can bring in the black pattern in her skirt. Suede taupe shoes add texture and complete the look.
Trend: Perfect Accent…The Shoe
Spring 2017 shoes are fun with embellishments, slides and ankle straps. I have picked out a few “go-to” styles below. The Valentino slides add a great pop to maxi dresses, wide leg pants and shorts. The Stuart Weitzmans look great with any pants from jeans to slacks (and with the deconstructed ruffled shirt). Gianvito Rossi continues to design shoes that not only look good, but make you look edgy and sexy at the same time. Bergdorfs inspired my surprise pick, the Manolo Blahnik satin mule by demonstrating its versatility and beauty.
Trend: Add Reconstructed Ruffles
This season’s ruffles are not prissy. The reconstructed ruffles are edgy, interesting and feminine. Wear them on the top, like this MSGM shirt with white pants and you get a crisp summer look. Jeans (from dark to faded and ripped) will add more edge. Ruffles on wide-legged white pants (Jonathan Simkhai) look great with a fitted shirt at a cocktail party. JCrew added ruffles to this skirt in the perfect place to make you look slimmer.
Avery Tip: Pick what works for you. As Fashion Insider Andrea Leon Talley said, “fashion is kind (because it makes you feel good).”
Designer Watch: Maria Grazia Chiuri
As Maria Grazia Chiuri moved fashion houses, I watched to see if the Valentino line could stay exciting while watching her impact at Christian Dior. It was exciting to see that Chiuri, Dior’s first woman creative director has added a fresh outlook, improving on its feminine masterpieces. Her view is ” there is not one kind of woman”…I love that flexibility. And yes – Valentino was great this year too!
